What is Consciousness Based Sport?

Consciousness Based Sports (CBS) endeavors to take sports activities to a new level of understanding and practice; to a higher level of fulfillment at the individual, team and spectator levels. CBS teaches the athlete to perform under high challenge without the challenge becoming stress.

How?

Challenge is good for the mind, brain and body. Under challenge the brain fires faster and processes experiences more quickly. The attention is wide angle and the thinking and acting is precise. When the challenge gets too high, the brain shuts itself down and the body goes into fight-or-flight. That is when athletes are injured. Through Transcendental Meditation (TM) practice and instruction in identifying silence in activity, CBS raises the challenge/stress line and allows the athlete to perform at the best more frequently and for longer periods.

Quicker Recovery from Stress Through TM

Rather than training hard, CBS starts with the athlete going in the opposite direction: sitting still, closing the eyes and transcending the here and now. The mental technique employed by TM allows the mind to go to the place where thoughts come from. The process is very natural due to the innate tendency of the mind to go to levels of its self that are more charming, interesting and satisfying. This is the nature of the mind. Deeper levels of the mind are where thoughts originate.

Improved Self Actualization Through TM

Once in motion from the subtle, quiet level of the mind thoughts move through and are buffeted about by the stresses associated with/within the grosser aspects of our physiologies. Like an arrow that is miss-aimed, when we have a lot of stress, then the manifest results of our thoughts will be less sophisticated and less successful (off-target). If we are rested and stress-free or at least less stressed, then our thoughts and associated actions will be more effective.

Improved Reaction Time with TM

Diving deep into the source of our mental activity, which again is the precursor to physical activity, allows us when the eyes are open, to bring the coherence and evolutionary qualities that the deeper levels of the mind inherently exhibit, into our waking activities, including our sports. When we meditate, our pre frontal cortex becomes awakened and when we bring such brain-wave functioning into activity, even in small amounts, we gain wakefulness and alertness along with the capacity to act dynamically for the tasks at hand. This functioning during sports activity, especially during a game is how some athletes experience “the zone” perceiving everything in slow motion.

The "Zone" Experience

“The zone” allows an athlete to maintain a broader awareness within the context of dynamic activity and results in effective motion and effective motion translates into effective performance.

Everybody Wins

Being in “the zone” has come to mean efficiency and effectiveness in sports, but those who experience it typically can’t explain what it is nor do they know what to do to make such distinctive experiences happen more frequently. Being in the zone is commonly described as being in a fluid, frictionless flow where one’s awareness and senses are heightened and one’s actions are spontaneously incisive, measured precisely to the moment’s needs and are conspicuously effective. Those who have first-hand knowledge of “the zone” also report experiencing time in a slow motion context and from a position of quiet internal observation; in effect a heighted sense of witnessing the dynamics of their sport played out before them by a silent observer in sync with their own nature whereby they are simultaneously detached observer and fluid participant while in dynamic activity. This is actualization of the principle of locating silence within sports.

Locating Silence for Sporting Success

For the athlete’s mind to be as quiet, awake/alert and clear as is humanly possible, the source of their conscious thoughts has to be from the deepest level of their mind and beyond that, from the experience of their true inner Self. This level of thought is the purest in intent as it is closest to the source of our being; our creator. An arrow drawn to full capacity and at steady rest by the archer’s ear is essential for the trajectory of the released arrow to reach its target. If restless and unsteady, then the drawn arrow will easily be released with a trajectory that will magnify the unrest and stray from the target. SFS teaches the athlete to take their mind to the fundamental basis of their dynamic action: the depths of their thinking in order to have powerful thoughts that lead them to powerful decision making, that lead them to powerful actions, and greater capability to manifest their desires; to act successfully. Accessing the deeper levels of our consciousness becomes a habit with time and the beneficial effects spill over into all of our waking actions. The overall effect is profound and contributes to development of each individual’s full potential.

Transcendental Meditation (TM)

An athlete conditioned with CBS training can raise their game and the level of challenge they are capable of dealing with without stress. There are numerous training techniques that CBS promotes, but none is more fundamental, more foundational than the central training technique: Transcendental Meditation(TM).
